Architecture is inherently an experiential practice, both in how one exists within a space and how we as designers engage the design process. This studio’s emphasis was the application of abstract design concepts into specific architectural spaces that respond to both programmatic and contextual constraints. Students’ research and analysis were generative in developing an over-arching design concept/agenda that brought intention to individual work. Design should not be a collection of isolated ideas, but rather a carefully crafted set of moves and decisions that work in synchronicity to support a larger idea. Above all, a design must be clear, purposeful and well-resolved, with each design element contributing to the spatialized solution that emerges from the design constraints identified.

In this studio, students were tasked with developing an art space to showcase the work of a specific, assigned artist. Curves were prohibited and any non-orthogonal angles had to be directly related to context and/or program.
